The smell of aged wood and beeswax in St. Jude\u2019s Church still reminds me of the day my parents left me there at 13 with my 3-year-old twin brothers, saying God would take care of us before walking away.<\/p>\n

A nun found us, and a woman named Evelyn later raised us. After she died, I became my brothers\u2019 legal guardian at 18 and worked two jobs to keep us together.<\/p>\n

Fourteen years later, my parents returned\u2014well-dressed and acting like nothing had happened\u2014demanding the boys back for a \u201cbetter life\u201d and their public image.<\/p>\n

Instead of deciding myself, I let my brothers choose. At the park, they rejected my parents\u2019 promises and chose me.<\/p>\n
