South African figure skater Kira Meyer has died at just 12 years old following a severe electric scooter accident.
Her mother, Angelique Meyer, first shared the news that Kira had been airlifted to Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg after suffering a critical brain injury and being placed in an ICU coma. Over the following days, she continued giving updates, saying Kira remained unresponsive but stable.
On May 16, doctors confirmed that Kira was brain dead. Later reports confirmed she passed away after her lungs failed while she was on life support. Her mother described the devastating ordeal while asking the public for prayers and support throughout.
A memorial service was scheduled for May 22.
The South African Figure Skating Association paid tribute to Kira, remembering her as a cherished young member of the skating community whose presence would be deeply missed on and off the ice.
