I secretly paid Ella to go to prom with my shy son Jeremiah, believing I was giving him a happy memory.
But after prom, I received a message from his teacher and a photo showing Ella in tears and Jeremiah standing over her.
At school, I learned he had embarrassed her, told others she was “paid for,” and chased her when she tried to leave. When confronted, he admitted it was revenge for years of being ignored.
Everything I believed about him collapsed.
When Ella’s mother arrived, I admitted I had paid her and took responsibility. Jeremiah accused me of choosing her over him, but I finally stopped excusing his actions.
He left for college soon after, and I was left with silence—and the truth I had avoided for too long.
