Former NHL star Claude Lemieux has died at age 60, authorities confirmed, with his death being reported as a suicide. He was found early Thursday morning in a warehouse area of his family’s business in Lake Park, Florida, after failing to return home. His son discovered the body, and the family has since gathered in Palm Beach to grieve and meet with investigators.
Fans and employees at the family business have been leaving flowers and paying tribute, while relatives described a deeply painful loss.
Lemieux, born in 1965 in Quebec, Canada, was a four-time Stanley Cup champion and one of the NHL’s most intense playoff performers. He won titles with the Montreal Canadiens in 1986 and with the New Jersey Devils in 1995, 2000, and 2003, and also played for the Colorado Avalanche, Phoenix Coyotes, Dallas Stars, and San Jose Sharks.
Over his 20-season career, he scored 379 goals and 786 points in 1,215 games, and earned the Conn Smythe Trophy in 1995 as playoff MVP. He was also known for a fierce rivalry with the Detroit Red Wings.
After retirement, he remained involved in hockey and business and was the father of NHL player Brendan Lemieux, who shared a heartfelt tribute online.!!
