Sanford and Son star Demond Wilson dies at 79 – cause of death revealed

Demond Wilson, best known for playing Lamont Sanford on the groundbreaking sitcom Sanford & Son, has died at age 79. His son confirmed he passed away at his home in Palm Springs after complications from cancer.

Born in 1946, Wilson showed a passion for performing early, making his Broadway debut at just four years old. Before his TV fame, he also served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War as a sergeant in the 4th Infantry Division, where he was wounded in combat and awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star.

Wilson rose to fame in 1972 alongside Redd Foxx on Sanford & Son, a show that ran five seasons and helped pave the way for more Black family-centered sitcoms. His role as Lamont Sanford made him a beloved television figure and part of pop culture history.

After the show ended, Wilson continued acting, wrote a memoir reflecting on his career, and later appeared on Girlfriends. He is survived by his wife of over 50 years and their six children.
