Pet euthanasia is a sensitive issue, especially when animals have medical problems. Recently, a puppy with birth defects was brought to a New Zealand vet to be put down—but the vet made a different choice.
Veterinarian Oliver Reeve was asked to euthanize a young puppy, but instead decided to adopt him. He shared the moment online, introducing the dog as his “new son,” which sparked praise from many and criticism of the original owner.
Reeve urged people not to judge, explaining that euthanasia can sometimes be a humane decision and that the owner did seek veterinary care rather than letting the puppy suffer.
The puppy, now named Toby, has since had surgery to correct his birth defects and is expected to undergo another procedure soon. Reeve says Toby is recovering well and should be healthy after treatment.
