“We’d rather you not stay at the resort,” Dad said. Mom added, “Maybe book somewhere else for the night.”

“…not your setting.”

I let it sit before answering. “Yes,” I said calmly. “There is.”

James didn’t hesitate. “I’ll handle it immediately.”

I finished my coffee by the lake, as if nothing had changed—though everything had. My family had simply confirmed how they still saw me.

Back at the resort, the lobby was tense. My father was demanding my reservation be cancelled.

“You can’t cancel that reservation,” I said.

Then a man in a suit arrived. “I’m James Hendricks, Director of Operations.”

He said the reservation was under owner review and couldn’t be changed without approval.

My father demanded to speak to the owner.

James turned to me. “Miss Patterson… is that necessary?”

Silence fell.

“You said this wasn’t my setting,” I told my father.

Then James revealed the truth: I held controlling interest in the resort group.

I kept my reservation—and theirs.

And for once, they had nothing left to say.
