“…not your setting.”
I let it sit.
“Yes,” I said calmly. “There is.”
James didn’t hesitate.
“I’ll handle it.”
I hung up, finished my coffee, and watched the lake like nothing had changed.
Because for them… nothing had yet.
At the Grand View Resort, my father was already at the desk.
“She’s not staying here,” he said. “Cancel it.”
My brother stood behind him. My mother stayed silent.
I stepped in.
“You can’t cancel that reservation.”
My father turned—confident as always.
Then the elevator opened.
A man in a suit stepped out.
“Mr. Patterson?”
“Yes.”
“I’m James Hendricks, Director of Operations.”
The room shifted.
He looked at me. “Miss Patterson.”
My father frowned. “What is this?”
James stayed calm.
“The reservation is under owner review.”
My brother blinked. “Owner?”
“Yes,” James said. “The owner.”
Silence.
Then:
“Miss Patterson holds controlling interest in the resort.”
My mother froze. My brother went pale.
My father stared. “That’s impossible.”
I met his eyes.
“You said this wasn’t my setting.”
No answer.
For the first time… he had none.
I picked up my suitcase.
And walked to the elevator.
Behind me, no one spoke.
Because they had finally realized the truth—too late.
