UPDATE: Julian McMahon’s official cause of death has been revealed. A report from the Pinellas County Medical Examiner in Florida confirmed he died from lung metastasis caused by head and neck metastatic cancer. His death was ruled natural, and he has since been cremated.
McMahon, best known for Nip/Tuck and Charmed, died at 56 on July 2 in Clearwater, Florida, after a private battle with cancer. His wife, Kelly Paniagua, confirmed the news, saying he “died peacefully after a valiant effort to overcome cancer.” She added that he loved his family, friends, work, and fans, and asked for privacy while the family grieves.
Born July 27, 1968, in Sydney, Australia, McMahon was the son of former Australian prime minister William McMahon. He started as a model before moving into acting, appearing in Australian shows like Home and Away and later U.S. series such as Another World and Profiler.
His breakout roles included Cole Turner in Charmed and Dr. Christian Troy in Nip/Tuck, the latter earning him a Golden Globe nomination in 2005. In film, he played Doctor Doom in Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, and appeared in Premonition alongside Sandra Bullock.
Later TV roles included Runaways and the CBS drama FBI: Most Wanted (2020–2022). He also appeared in the film Swinging Safari and the Netflix series The Residence.
McMahon was married three times: to singer Dannii Minogue (1994–1995), actress Brooke Burns—with whom he had a daughter, Madison—and later to Kelly Paniagua in 2014.
