Greta Thunberg has returned to Sweden after being detained in Israel while taking part in a humanitarian flotilla heading to Gaza. The 22-year-old climate activist says she was mistreated in custody and claims Israeli guards wrote an offensive message—“Whore Greta”—on her suitcase.
Thunberg was among activists and politicians detained when Israeli forces intercepted more than 40 aid vessels defying the naval blockade of Gaza. She told Aftonbladet that since returning home she has struggled with sleep, describing nightmares and lingering shock from the experience.
In interviews, Thunberg alleged she was held in extreme heat, confined in metal cages, verbally abused, kicked, and mocked by guards. She said detainees were forced to stand overnight, threatened with gas, and repeatedly deprived of sleep. She also claimed guards took selfies with her and mocked her while she begged for water.
Israel’s Foreign Ministry strongly denied all allegations, stating her rights were upheld, no complaints were filed, and that she was treated according to international law before being deported on October 6.
The flotilla, which carried hundreds of activists and aid supplies, has renewed debate over Israel’s blockade of Gaza, with supporters praising Thunberg’s activism and critics accusing her of misinformation.
