What began as a normal school evening in Madison turned into a life-changing event for one family.
An 8-year-old boy was home alone doing homework when his mother didn’t return and his calls went unanswered. As hours passed, worry grew. Remembering his mother’s advice—if he ever felt unsafe, he should ask for help—he called 911.
At first, dispatch thought it might be a mistake, but the boy explained he had been alone all day. Police were sent immediately and confirmed no adult was home. What started as a welfare check quickly became a missing person case.
Officers kept the boy safe while tracking his mother’s phone signal. They eventually located her car outside town, where she was found unconscious after a medical emergency, severely dehydrated.
She was rushed to the hospital and later stabilized, with doctors saying the quick response likely saved her life. Mother and son were later reunited in relief.
The incident highlighted a simple but powerful lesson: teaching children to seek help can make a critical difference in emergencies.
