A Washington high school lacrosse standout has died after a routine play turned tragic during a college recruiting showcase.
Eliot Abramson, 17, a midfielder at Mercer Island High School near Seattle, was struck in the neck by a high-speed ball on June 1 during the event, causing him to collapse on the field.
He was taken to Harborview Medical Center, had emergency surgery, and remained in intensive care for nearly a week before dying on June 7.
His mother remembered him as joyful and said she takes comfort in believing he is reunited with his late father.
His death has renewed concern about rare but serious injuries in lacrosse, a fast-growing sport set to return to the Olympics in 2028.
