For nearly two years, I thought I was dating Matt. Turns out, I was dating his mother too.
Everything changed at his birthday dinner when Diane forced me to give up my seat beside him, saying, “Scooch, sweetie,” before taking my place. The whole family laughed—including Matt. I left the restaurant heartbroken.
When I told him how hurt I was, he brushed it off as “just a joke” and said I was overreacting. So I decided to give him one final lesson.
I invited his family to dinner and placed Matt and Diane alone at a tiny table labeled “MOM AND HER TREASURE SEATS ONLY,” while everyone else enjoyed the main table. When Matt complained, I repeated his own words: “Relax—it’s just a joke.”
Hours later, he broke up with me over text. My final message read: “I can take a joke. I dated you for two years.” And with that, I finally reclaimed my place—by walking away.
