I thought Claire abandoned my dying son.
When Alex was diagnosed with terminal cancer, she packed her bags and left. I hated her for it.
I moved in and cared for him until his final breath. He never blamed Claire. He never even mentioned her name.
After his funeral, she returned with a little girl named Lisa and revealed a secret that changed everything.
Before his illness, Alex had found Lisa, a neglected child living in an orphanage. He became her safe place. He brought her books, toys, and love. When she needed urgent heart surgery, Alex wanted to adopt her.
Then he got sick.
Claire explained that while I was caring for Alex, she was fighting to save Lisa. She used her time, money, and energy to give the child the future Alex wanted for her.
Alex’s last request was simple:
“Make sure she grows up knowing someone chose her.”
When Lisa showed me a drawing of her and Alex, calling him “Daddy Alex,” my heart broke.
I realized I had lost my son — but I had not lost his love.
Because Alex left behind the greatest gift of all: a child who carries his kindness forward.
